Description

Premium bare corrosion-resisting chromium-nickel TIG welding rod engineered for dissimilar metal welding and buffer layer applications. This 2.4mm diameter ER309L filler metal is the industry standard solution for joining stainless steel to carbon steel without hot cracking or weld failure.
Dissimilar Metal Welding Specialist
The 309L grade is specifically formulated for welding dissimilar metals, particularly austenitic stainless steels to low-alloy or non-alloyed steels. When joining carbon steel to stainless steel, ER309L minimizes weld dilution and prevents hot cracking through its higher ferrite content compared to standard 308L rods. The alloy creates a buffer layer that accommodates the metallurgical differences between base metals, ensuring strong, crack-resistant joints that withstand thermal cycling and mechanical stress.
Superior Crack Resistance
Higher ferrite content (approximately 10%) provides excellent resistance to hot cracking during solidification. This makes it ideal for high-restraint joints and applications where weld integrity is critical. The enhanced ferrite also improves tolerance to dilution from carbon steel base metals, maintaining weld deposit properties even with variable penetration.
Low Carbon Protection
Maximum carbon content of 0.03% reduces the possibility of intergranular carbide precipitation. This increases resistance to intergranular corrosion without requiring stabilizers like niobium or titanium. The low carbon content is essential for buffer layers and dissimilar joints that may undergo heat treatment or operate in corrosive environments.
Technical Specifications
AWS Classification ER309L per A5.9. EN ISO 14343 designation W 23 12 L. Diameter 2.4mm (3/32 inch). Packaging 5kg with approximately 1000mm cut lengths. Alloy type austenitic with approximately 10% ferrite content, 24% chromium, 13% nickel, low carbon. Shielding gas 100% Argon I1 per EN ISO 14175. DCEN polarity recommended.
Chemical Composition
Typical values: Carbon 0.015%, Chromium 24.0%, Nickel 13.0%, Manganese 1.7%, Silicon 0.4%, Molybdenum 0.1%. Ferrite number approximately 12 in weld metal. These levels ensure optimal balance between corrosion resistance and crack prevention in mixed metal joints.
Mechanical Properties
Tensile strength 85,500 psi as welded. Yield strength 58,000 psi. Elongation 36% minimum. Charpy V-notch impact 105 ft-lb at room temperature. These properties provide robust performance across the temperature range from cryogenic to elevated service conditions.
Primary Applications

Welding dissimilar joints between 308L stainless steel and mild or carbon steel in structural fabrication. Buffer layers on carbon or low-alloy steels prior to cladding with 308L or 316L for corrosion protection. Repair and maintenance of equipment with mixed metal construction. Overlay welding on carbon steel for corrosion-resistant surfaces. Joining 309S and similar 24% Cr, 13% Ni type steels in wrought or cast form

Welding Parameters for 2.4mm Diameter
For material thickness 2mm to 4mm use 90 to 130 amps with 10 to 15 liters per minute argon flow. For 4mm to 6mm thickness use 120 to 175 amps with 12 to 18 liters per minute. For 6mm to 10mm thickness use 150 to 220 amps with 15 to 20 liters per minute. DCEN polarity with pure argon shielding gas is essential for proper arc stability and bead appearance.
Base Metal Compatibility
Suitable for AISI 304, 308, 309, and 310 stainless steels joined to mild steel, carbon steel, or low-alloy steels. Compatible with ferritic stainless grades when joined to carbon steel. Also used for welding 18-8 type stainless steels to carbon steels for buffer layers and clad side welding of 18-8 clad steels. Not recommended for joining similar 316L to 316L where matching chemistry is preferred.
Storage and Handling
Store in original 5kg packaging at 15 to 25 degrees Celsius with relative humidity below 60%. Keep sealed until use to prevent moisture absorption that could cause porosity. Once opened, consider rod ovens at 120 to 150 degrees Celsius for critical applications or high-humidity environments. Rotate inventory first-in-first-out to ensure optimal weld quality.
