Description

Premium bare corrosion-resisting chromium-nickel TIG welding rod engineered for precision dissimilar metal welding on thin-to-medium gauge materials. The 1.6mm diameter provides optimal filler metal deposition for controlled heat input applications, making it the ideal choice for sheet metal fabrication, custom brackets, and delicate overlay work without overwhelming the joint.
Precision Thin Gauge Specialist
The 1.6mm size is specifically designed for thin-to-medium gauge materials, delivering sufficient filler to build a quality bead while maintaining precise heat control. This prevents burn-through on thin stainless steel sections and minimizes distortion in sheet metal applications. The controlled deposition rate makes it perfect for welding custom brackets, repairing industrial equipment, and fabricating precision components where heat management is critical.
Dissimilar Metal Excellence
ER309L is the industry standard for joining austenitic stainless steels to carbon or low-alloy steels. The alloy minimizes weld dilution and prevents hot cracking through higher ferrite content compared to standard 308L rods. When welding dissimilar metals, the 309L composition accommodates metallurgical differences between base metals, creating strong crack-resistant joints that withstand thermal cycling and mechanical stress.
Buffer Layer and Overlay Applications
Excellent for buttered passes and buffer layers on carbon steel prior to cladding with 308L or 316L stainless steel. The 1.6mm diameter allows precise control when applying thin buffer layers, ensuring proper chemistry transition without excessive buildup. Ideal for surfacing mild steel with stainless steel for corrosion protection and repairing clad steels.
Low Carbon Protection
Maximum carbon content of 0.03% reduces intergranular carbide precipitation, increasing resistance to intergranular corrosion without requiring stabilizers. This is essential for buffer layers and dissimilar joints that may undergo heat treatment or operate in corrosive environments.
Technical Specifications
AWS Classification ER309L per A5.9. EN ISO 14343 designation W 23 12 L. Diameter 1.6mm. Packaging 5kg with approximately 1000mm cut lengths. Alloy type austenitic with approximately 10% ferrite content, 24% chromium, 13% nickel, low carbon. Shielding gas 100% Argon. DCEN polarity recommended.
Chemical Composition
Typical values: Carbon 0.02%, Chromium 23.2%, Nickel 13.4%, Manganese 1.8%, Silicon 0.4%, Molybdenum 0.1%, Nitrogen 0.05%. Ferrite number approximately 10 in weld metal.
Mechanical Properties
Tensile strength 600 MPa. Yield strength 440 MPa. Elongation 41%. Charpy V-notch impact 160J at 20 degrees Celsius, 130J at minus 60 degrees Celsius, 90J at minus 110 degrees Celsius.
Welding Parameters for 1.6mm Diameter
For material thickness 1mm to 2mm use 35 to 60 amps with 8 to 12 liters per minute argon flow. For 2mm to 4mm thickness use 60 to 90 amps with 10 to 15 liters per minute. For 4mm to 6mm thickness use 90 to 130 amps with 12 to 18 liters per minute. DCEN polarity with pure argon shielding gas ensures optimal arc stability and bead appearance on thin materials.
Primary Applications

Welding dissimilar joints between 304 or 308L stainless steel and mild or carbon steel in structural fabrication and custom bracket manufacturing. Buffer layers on carbon or low-alloy steels prior to cladding with 308L or 316L for corrosion protection. Sheet metal overlay work requiring precise heat control. Repair and maintenance of equipment with mixed metal construction. Joining 309S and similar 24% Cr 13% Ni type steels in wrought or cast form. Welding root runs on the stainless side of clad steels.

Base Metal Compatibility

Suitable for AISI 304, 308, 309, and 310 stainless steels joined to mild steel, carbon steel, or low-alloy steels. Compatible with ferritic stainless grades when joined to carbon steel. Also used for welding 18-8 type stainless steels to carbon steels for buffer layers and clad side welding of 18-8 clad steels. Not recommended for joining similar 316L to 316L where matching chemistry is preferred.
Storage and Handling
Store in original 5kg packaging at 15 to 25 degrees Celsius with relative humidity below 60%. Keep sealed until use to prevent moisture absorption that could cause porosity. Once opened, consider rod ovens at 120 to 150 degrees Celsius for critical applications or high-humidity environments. Rotate inventory first-in-first-out to ensure optimal weld quality.
